Tonglen is Tibetan word meaning 'giving and taking' or 'sending and receiving.' As the name suggests, the practice involves imagining the suffering of someone outside yourself and accepting it into your own self and then sending out loving-kindness in return. Paradoxically, this has the effect of reducing your own suffering, cleansing past regrets or manifesting a sense of forgiveness from or towards others.  The Dalai Lama has said he practices Tonglen every day.
